The Higher National Diploma (HND) in Applied Science is a comprehensive two-year programme, offering an ideal route for students to build a strong foundation in science, equivalent to the first two years of a Bachelor’s degree in the UK. With this qualification, students can seamlessly progress to the final year of a Bachelor’s degree at prestigious institutions such as the University of Essex or Ulster University, making it a cost-effective and efficient way to start a career in the UK.
Students will study common subjects during the first year, gaining a broad understanding of scientific principles. In the second year, they will select a specialisation—such as Biology, Biotechnology, Forensic Science, Chemistry, Water and Waste Water, Environmental Sustainability or Food Science, Technology and Nutrition—enabling them to make an informed choice for their Bachelor’s degree.
For those taking the Biology specialisation, there is the option to progress to a BSc (Hons) in Biomedical Science. Upon completion of this degree or a BSc (Hons) in Biomedical Scienc or Human Biology, students have the opportunity to join the four-year accelerated MBBS programme at Ulster University. This pathway offers a clear, affordable, and streamlined progression from foundational science education to a potential career in medicine.
The HND Applied Science programme is developed in collaboration with Pearson and shaped by input from industry leaders such as GxPpro Ltd, The Royal Society of Chemistry, The Royal Society of Biology, and The Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining. This ensures students are well-prepared with relevant skills and knowledge for both academic advancement and successful careers in the science and healthcare sectors.
