Program Overview

For many Indian families, Civil Engineering still brings one image to mind: constructing houses, apartments and villas. In reality, civil and built-environment professionals design and manage the infrastructure that keeps entire countries functioning — highways, metros, railways, airports, bridges, tunnels, ports, dams, water systems, smart cities and renewable-energy infrastructure.

The career possibilities are equally broad. Students can progress towards civil and structural engineering, transport engineering, geotechnical engineering, quantity surveying, construction management, BIM and digital construction, project planning, sustainability, building services and infrastructure consulting.

Why does this matter? Because countries are investing heavily in infrastructure while facing skills shortages.

Australia currently employs around 76,800 civil engineering professionals across areas including roads, railways, airports, water systems, structures and transport infrastructure. Australian Government data also shows construction remains one of the professional areas experiencing skills shortages.

In the UK, the national infrastructure pipeline includes 734 planned projects representing £718 billion of public and private investment over the coming decade. Government forecasts indicate these projects will require a substantial construction and infrastructure workforce.

Across Europe, construction and engineering continue to experience persistent shortages, while investment in energy efficiency, sustainable buildings and the green transition is creating new requirements for technical skills.

At KCIC, students can begin through the Pearson BTEC Higher National pathway in Civil Engineering and the Built Environment, developing practical skills in construction technology, infrastructure, surveying, design, project management and digital engineering.

After completing the HND, eligible KCIC students can progress through lateral-entry pathways into the later years of a related bachelor’s degree overseas, subject to university requirements.

Further studies / Careers

After completing the first two years BTEC HND diploma, students can continue their BEng/BTech studies overseas through established articulation and advanced-entry (lateral entry) pathways. Students progress into Years 3 and 4 of a Bachelor of Engineering in Australia, UK, Europe and US. KCIC’s university pathway network includes institutions such as RMIT University, University of Technology Sydney (UTS), University of Newcastle, Charles Strut University, Heriot-Watt University, University of Essex, Ulster University, and other 450+ partner universities accepting BTEC HND Diploma.

Entry Criteria

You must have subject specific grades - 70% in Mathematics & English at Grade 11 and/or 12 or equivalent qualifications from a recognised board.

Study Journey from KCIC to Study Abroad

Year 1
Foundation - HNC

HNC Construction & the Built Environment focuses on building core skills such as problem-solving, basic design, construction technology, technical documentation, and teamwork. At this stage, learning is broad and prepares students for progression, with introductory exposure to areas like construction management, building design, and civil engineering.

Year 2
Advanced - HND

HND Construction and the Built Environment level, students gain advanced skills in construction design, project planning, building technology, surveying, and site management, using industry-standard tools and real-world projects. Students can specialise in areas such as Construction Management, Quantity Surveying, Building Services Engineering, Civil Engineering, Sustainable Construction, or General Construction for flexible progression.

Year 3
Bachelor’s Uni Transfer

On successful completion of the HND, students transfer to one of our international partner institutions and complete the final two years of study to be awarded a full international bachelor’s degree. Available degree options include Civil Engineering, Construction and the Built Environment, Architectural Engineering, Quantity Surveying, and Construction Project Management.

Year 4
Bachelor’s Hons

In Year 4, students complete their final year at the university and graduate with a full international bachelor’s degree.

Year 5
Global Work Experience

Upon graduation, students receive a full international degree and are eligible for an 18–24 month post-study work visa, allowing them to stay and seek employment. This visa permits full-time work and does not require employer sponsorship.

Built environment degrees from Heriot-Watt are accredited by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS), Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE), the Energy Institute (EI), and the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) — giving graduates internationally recognised qualifications respected across professional bodies worldwide.

Exemptions

On completion of a bachelor's degree, students may apply for professional membership with recognised bodies such as the Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE), the Energy Institute (EI), the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB), and the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS).
