Biomedical Science
Genetics
Build a foundation in biomedical science and biotechnology, then progress towards laboratory, research and healthcare degrees.
Overview
The greatest questions of our time are written in the language of life: in our genes, our molecules and our planet. This programme teaches you to read them.
It is a programme for curious, scientific minds: those who want to understand how life works at every scale, from the DNA within a cell to the ecosystems that sustain us all, and to use that knowledge to improve human health and protect the planet.
Your journey begins with two years at KCIC, Chennai, earning a UK-regulated Higher National Diploma in Applied Sciences. Laboratory technique, scientific data handling and the regulation of science form your foundation, before you follow one of two pathways: Biology, or Environmental Sustainability.
Then, two years in England at the University of Essex, ranked 11th in the UK for biology in the Guardian University Guide 2027. You enter the second year of your degree in one of three majors, and complete it with research of your own alongside academics and research students in shared laboratories.
You graduate with a full honours degree from the University of Essex, on your way to a career in science, health or sustainability.
Three Majors, One Journey
A shared scientific foundation. A choice of frontier.
BSc (Hons) Genetics (Biology pathway)
Genetics is at the forefront of modern biology, driving progress in medicine and synthetic biology. You study molecular biology, genome science, medical genetics, human molecular genetics and genome bioinformatics, with options spanning stem cells, cancer, virology and plant biotechnology.
BSc (Hons) Biochemistry (Biology pathway)
Biochemistry reveals life at its most fundamental: the molecules, enzymes and membranes that make every cell work. You study protein structure and bioinformatics, metals in biotechnology, enzymology and bioenergetics, using facilities from protein crystallisation robots to cell imaging microscopes.
BSc (Hons) Global Sustainability (Environmental Sustainability pathway)
Sustainability is the defining challenge of our century. You tackle the interacting climate, biodiversity and nature crises alongside questions of inequality and social justice, with options reaching into economics, philosophy, psychology, sociology and politics, and field study at the Colne and Blackwater estuary.
Genetics and Biochemistry share much of their second year: molecular biology, cell biology and genome science. All three majors come together in the final year’s Research Project in Life Sciences.
