Biomedical Science
Build a foundation in biomedical science and biotechnology, then progress towards laboratory, research and healthcare degrees.
Overview
Every diagnosis begins with a question. This programme teaches you to answer it.
Biomedical science is the study of how disease begins, how it changes the body, and how it can be detected, treated and prevented. It is the quiet science behind modern medicine, and the career of those who prefer the laboratory to the limelight.
Your first year unfolds at KCIC, Chennai. Cell biology, chemistry, biochemistry, anatomy and physiology, learnt with laboratory precision. You earn a UK-regulated Higher National Certificate in Applied Sciences (Biology).
Then, two years at Ulster University’s Coleraine campus, on the banks of the River Bann. You enter the second year of a degree accredited by the Institute of Biomedical Science, rated 90% for student satisfaction in the National Student Survey 2026, and taught within a research environment recognised as world-leading.
You graduate with the full three-year BSc (Hons) Biomedical Science. A degree that opens the doors of hospital laboratories, pharmaceutical research and postgraduate study at the world’s great universities.
The Laboratory Where discovery is not studied. It is practised.
At Coleraine, biomedical science is taught where it is advanced. In the UK’s Research Excellence Framework 2021, the majority of Ulster’s research was rated world-leading or internationally excellent.
You learn in state-of-the-art facilities, including the Centre for Molecular Bioscience and new biomedical laboratories opened in 2026, alongside scientists at the frontier of their field.
And excellence is recognised. Final-year students compete for the IBMS President’s Award and the Randox Rising Star Award, among honours from the profession’s most respected names.
